SkinPen Microneedling
There are many microneedling devices on the market. The Bloom Clinic has chosen the SkinPen as it is the world’s first and only FDA-cleared microneedling device with excellent safety features and clinically proven to show results after just one treatment, however 3-6 treatments are recommended for the best results.
It is an effective treatment for reducing the appearance of scars (eg acne scars), wrinkles, irregular skin tone and general age-related appearances of the skin. It can be used on any part of the body including the face, neck and décolletage. SkinPen works by comfortably creating thousands of micro-channels in the skin in a highly controlled manner. This in turn stimulates the body’s natural wound healing process to regenerate and resurface the skin with new collagen. Scar tissue is not formed during the process and any existing scar tissue is remodelled and resurfaced while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact. This results in a more youthful appearance of skin which is smoother, more evenly toned and firmer looking.
Lines and wrinkles can develop with ageing as the skin loses its natural architecture through loss of collagen and elastin leading to fine lines, wrinkles, large pores and uneven skin texture and tone. Regeneration of the injured skin occurs from new collagen fibres forming at the damaged site which improves the skin’s overall structural support.
The handheld SkinPen device can be adapted to work at different depths depending on the area of the face and condition being treated. Shallow depth (0.25mm) works on the superficial layers of the skin and can improve the appearance of fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture and minor scarring. Medium depth (1.0mm) penetrates slightly deeper to target stretch marks, as well as scarring and wrinkles. Deeper depths (1.5mm) get to work on the damaged tissues at a lower level of the skin’s structure. Deeper acne scars and scars that develop through surgery or trauma can be improved, as well as more prominent wrinkles and rough skin texture.
Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy. By causing controlled injury, the skin begins its natural response of healing and repair. The skin starts to remodel itself through the triggered production of new collagen and elastin – proteins that act as the natural scaffolding within the skin – and the structure restores its strength. The results produce firmer, smoother, younger looking skin.

Am I suitable for this treatment?
Dr Nandi will carry out a full facial assessment during a comprehensive consultation prior to treatment. This will include discussing and evaluating your individual concerns and expected outcomes, along with your general health and condition of your skin. The results of this assessment will enable Dr Nandi to make an informed decision, regarding your suitability for this treatment.
Is this treatment safe?
SkinPen microneedling has FDA approval and is found to be very safe when carried out by a trained professional. This treatment can be used on a range of skin types and tones, and can produce effective and noticeable results.
Is this treatment painful?
Pain levels are felt differently from person to person. SkinPen microneedling may cause a mild degree of discomfort but a topical numbing cream is applied for 20-30 minutes prior to treatment to ease any sensitivity during the procedure. Once the effects of the cream have worn off, many clients find that any tenderness has worn off too but can report feeling as though they have mild to moderate sunburn after the procedure. It is safe for all skin types, light to dark, and can be carried out at any time of the year.
Are there any side effects or risks?
SkinPen microneedling commonly incurs some redness immediately after the treatment which settles within 48 hours and so might not be best to carry out within two days of an important social event or work meeting. Dr Nandi will ensure she talks through the details of the procedure, including any possible side effects and will carry out the treatment around your work and social commitments.
What downtime can I expect?
Healing time can vary with each client – usually around two days. Although facial redness doesn’t often inhibit a person’s ability to carry on with their usual daily tasks, it is down to the individual as to how they want to recover during this period of mild sensitivity.

Dr Rita Nandi is very professional and explains each step of the procedure, she takes time to reassure you if it is a first time having a filler treatment, and answers any questions you may have.
