Jowls

Jowls

Jowls are typically characterised by sagging, heavy skin that appears on or below the jawline.

They can range from a slight dip to a more noticeable ‘pouch’ that makes the face appear droopy and lax. Primarily, jowls occur due to a decrease in the collagen and elastin production in the skin as we age. These proteins are responsible for the skin’s natural volume, as well as elasticity which gives the skin its ability to hold its firm structure and bounce back.

Through this process, the skin becomes weak and can start to sag.

A loss of tightness around the jaw can result in gravity pulling the fatty deposits beneath the skin downward. These deposits can settle on either side of the mouth and chin and subsequently form the appearance of a jowl.

Genetics can also play a part in how noticeable the jowls will become and the rate at which they develop. People also with naturally thinner skin and lower levels of collagen and elastin may find that the ageing process, and especially jowls, will appear earlier than with most other people.

Jowls can begin to form as early as in our 30’s, or as late as our 50’s. Everyone is different, but through a controlled approach to lifestyle, diet, exercise and a great skincare regime we help defer this sign of ageing.

Once jowls have taken hold, The Bloom Clinic can easily treat these through interventions such as skin tightening techniques, anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers to help restore tightness to the skin and encourage the renewal of collagen and elastin production.

By replacing lost volume to the cheeks and around the mouth, it can help to elevate the skin in the mid-face area, thus lifting the skin from the jawline so that you can step out with confidence.
