Acne Scars

A common complication that arises as a result of acne is acne scars and it is often the need to give in to temptation by picking and squeezing the spots that increases the risk of developing this concern.

Although picking any kind of pimple can irritate and potentially scar the skin, it is usually large spots such as nodules and cysts which lead to long term scarring.

Acne scars are a result of the skin repairing itself after the damage caused by an outbreak. It can affect the even texture of the skin and commonly appears in 3 different types: ice pick scars, rolling scars and boxcar scars.

Ice pick scars look like small, deep holes in the skin as though the skin has been punctured. When the skin appears to look uneven with a rippled look, this could indicate rolling scars. The scar tissue forms in bands under the skin’s surface to create this look.

Boxcar scars are the larger indentations in the skin, where the scarring has formed a small crater. These indentations are often round or oval in shape and give the complexion a dimpled look.

The appearance of scarring can often be accompanied by a discolouration of the skin and can cause just as much embarrassment and feelings of self-consciousness as acne itself. The appearance of scarring, including acne scars, will often improve slightly as time passes.

However, it is unlikely that the condition will resolve itself completely. Many people will use make-up to try and conceal this concern, which may or may not be as successful as desired.

When visiting The Bloom Clinic, an in-depth look at the type of scarring that you present with will be carefully assessed, during a comprehensive pretreatment consultation. Restoring an even surface to the skin can be achieved through the help of AlumierMD chemical peels and Skinpen microneedling which are highly effective treatments at tackling acne scarring.

As well as replenishing the skin cells, the production of collagen and elastin can be increased for an improved condition of the skin’s structure.
